In the suburbs of Chicago, a critical offsite rehabilitation facility adverted the potential loss of revenues of $30K-$50K /day for a shutdown due to unplanned HVAC/R/ outages. Just like any typical offsite location, this site has no BAS and no dedicated onsite facility maintenance staff, other than the receptionist who tries to coordinate HVAC/Plumbing/Electrical issues with the central facility team, 3rd party contractors as issues arise. The facility team is located at the central medical center at least an hour drive away from the offsite location.

Oftentimes, offsite locations are out of sight for the mind until a major event occurs causing downtime of the offsite, impacting patient safety, care, and revenue. This event is either the result of a catastrophic failure or an ongoing issue that exacerbates suddenly. Such events are followed by frantic visits by the facilities teams and service partners to resolve the emergencies to get the facility back up and running quickly. Special asset types such as the chillers, VRV systems, generators or even utility voltage variations can wreak havoc – affecting service uptime, breaking the budget and potential revenue loss. It is a constant struggle to manage the offsites and the central facilities team always wished they had a crystal ball to let them know about potential issues ahead of time.

During this session we will cover strategies to maintain up time of critical assets at offsite locations w/o BAS, to plan the downtime, reduce instances of revenue loss and improve operational efficiency so you gain a longer runway with limited dollars, year-over-year.

Emergency departments and correctional facilities are increasingly serving as default entry points for behavioral health crises—settings not designed for stabilization or healing. Based on planning lessons learned from Michigan’s Kent County Behavioral Health Crisis Center, developed through a public-private partnership between Network 180 and Trinity Health Saint Mary’s, this session explores how crisis stabilization models can improve access, reduce emergency department burden, and support better outcomes through thoughtful facility planning, safety-centered design, and operational alignment. Kevin’s primary focus at IU Health is to ensure that healthcare facility systems are designed to operate reliably while minimizing energy consumption. His work is influencing Design & Construction’s portfolio of close to $5 billion in capital projects – acute care facilities, ambulatory care facilities and free standing medical office buildings.

Cameron Hull is a Landscape Architect focused on traditional master planning and site design for clients in a wide range of government, education, and public sectors. Beyond his professional practice, he has worked to educate design students and affiliated professionals on the benefits of the collaborative design in elevating sustainable design. He currently sits on the Executive Committee for the Indiana Chapter of American Society of Landscape Architects and the INASLA Climate Action Committee working to improve sustainability and climate resilience in Indiana and the broader great lakes region.

We will present an NFPA 99 RFA class with both a live and interactive online component. The 2021 edition of the NFPA 99 formally designates the RFA as the individual accountable for operation and management of the piped medical gas and vacuum system. This key role includes oversight of risk management, emergency planning, documentation, and the brand new permit-to-work process that protects patients during repairs, shutdowns, and construction. If your facility relies on piped medical gases, having an RFA with verified competence will soon no longer be best practice but a requirement. Designing multi-department healthcare clinics presents unique challenges due to the varied and often conflicting requirements of different specialties. These challenges include accommodating distinct functional needs, promoting seamless workflows, maintaining patient privacy, and minimizing inter-departmental disruptions. Failure to address these complexities can compromise operational efficiency, staff well-being, and patient satisfaction, ultimately reducing the quality of care.

In light of the critical need for optimally functioning clinics, the design team conducted a post-occupancy evaluation of a multi-department clinic to assess how well its design aligns with operational effectiveness. Using on-site evaluations and staff surveys, we focused on user satisfaction and operational efficiency, which are critical to effective healthcare facility management. Additionally, we validated pre-construction predictions made using Discrete Event Simulation (DES), testing their reliability and emphasizing their importance in anticipatory design strategies.

Our findings suggest that data-driven design approaches can streamline patient care, reduce staff movement and fatigue, and improve job satisfaction. Environments aligned with healthcare workflows not only mitigate burnout but also support high-quality, patient-centered care. We advocate for resilient and adaptive healthcare environments that incorporate evidence-based spatial planning to address ongoing demands and challenges, benefiting all stakeholders in the healthcare process.

As healthcare systems evolve, engineering solutions must balance energy performance, resiliency, and adaptability, without compromising patient care. This session presents a joint client–engineer perspective on the transformation of the IU Health Saxony Campus in Fishers, Indiana, where a legacy facility with historically low energy performance is being reimagined to support future growth and operational flexibility.

Originally opened in 2012, the campus included a hospital, medical office building/ambulatory surgery center, and a central energy plant (CEP) serving only the hospital, with an Energy Star score of approximately 17-25. A major expansion of more than 200,000 SF, combined with the introduction of new clinical services, created an opportunity to fundamentally rethink energy strategy across both existing and new infrastructure. Through a coordinated approach, the project is projected to elevate the campus Energy Star score to 75.

Key interventions include strategic upgrades to the CEP, such as adding a heat-recovery chiller to meet year-round cooling demand and a right-sized centrifugal chiller to optimize performance during swing seasons. These enhancements enable more efficient equipment staging and reduce reliance on high-load systems. Concurrently, heating strategies were reconfigured to improve system responsiveness and efficiency.

Presented jointly by the owner and engineer, this session highlights how integrated planning, system-level thinking, and strong collaboration can deliver measurable performance gains while building a healthcare environment that is truly built to adapt.

Kevin’s primary focus at IU Health is to ensure that healthcare facility systems are designed to operate reliably while minimizing energy consumption. His role includes development of Engineering and Sustainability standards, providing guidance and quality control of building designs, and ensuring that systems operate as designed. His work is influencing Design & Construction’s portfolio of close to $5 billion in capital projects – acute care facilities, ambulatory care facilities and free standing medical office buildings.

Kevin currently serves as a voting member of ASHRAE 189.3 Committee for Design, Construction, and Operation of Sustainable High-Performance Health Care Facilities.

Nick’s main focus over the last 3 years has been healthcare design, primarily with IU Health. Nick leverages his design experience to also support commissioning projects including site visits, mechanical functional testing and loss of power testing. Nick recently earned his professional engineering license and looks forward deepening his knowledge of mechanical engineering.

Most facilities teams treat compliance checks the same way they treat repairs: as work orders. Monthly egress light tests, routine device inspections, recurring safety verifications: all logged, assigned, dispatched, and closed manually. At scale, this generates hundreds of work orders per month that have nothing to do with anything being broken. The CMMS fills with noise, critical repairs compete for the same queue, and technicians spend their days on tasks that technology could handle.

Bowen Health recognized this pattern and pursued a different approach. Rather than reorganizing their compliance management, they removed it from the manual workflow entirely.

By deploying automated compliance testing and reporting, routine tests shifted from human-dispatched tasks to automated processes. Smart devices run their own tests on schedule, results are logged automatically, and no work order is created unless something fails, at which point a targeted repair order is generated for that specific issue only.

The effect was immediate. In the first year, Bowen Health recovered 1,526 technician hours, equivalent to more than 38 full work weeks. Those hours were redeployed to proactive rounding in clinical areas, getting ahead of issues before they generated complaints from staff who had grown accustomed to hearing from Facilities too late.

Attendees leave with a framework for separating compliance work from repair work, a model for automating the former, and a roadmap for redirecting the recovered hours, applicable to small departments and large health systems alike.

He holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Indiana State University and has extensive experience as an instructor, having taught IICRC courses throughout the United States, Canada, and Australia. His courses have covered mold remediation and health and safety in water restoration, reaching professionals across multiple disciplines. Mike has been an OSHA 10-hour instructor since 2003 and has developed a wide range of training programs, including mold remediation, thermal imaging for restoration, sewage cleanup, soda blasting, and hands-on containment construction.

Mike holds multiple IICRC master-level certifications, including Master Water Restorer, Master Fire and Smoke Restorer, Master Textile Cleaner, and Applied Microbial Remediation Technician. He brings more than three decades of regulatory experience in healthcare life safety, emergency management, and security operations to this role. His thought leadership continues to shape industry understanding of evolving life safety and emergency preparedness standards.

Jim previously served as the original Field Director for Life Safety Code Surveyors at The Joint Commission, where he oversaw a team of more than 80 surveyors for over ten years. He joined The Joint Commission as a Life Safety Code Surveyor, bringing firsthand insight into compliance and accreditation processes across a wide range of healthcare settings. During his tenure, Jim played a vital role in reviewing and contributing to regulatory guidance, including editorial oversight for Environment of Care News and Emergency Management newsletters through Joint Commission Resources.

Prior to joining The Joint Commission, Jim served as Vice President and Safety Officer for a four-hospital system on Florida’s Space Coast. In this role, he led numerous safety and emergency initiatives, including the management of a real-world active shooter event at Palm Bay Hospital. His leadership in crisis demonstrated his ability to translate planning into effective, high-stakes responses.

Jim also served five non-consecutive terms as President of the Florida Hospital Association’s Security, Safety, and Emergency Management Professional Membership Group, where he was instrumental in standardizing emergency codes across the state and advancing forensic training integration into Florida’s police and corrections academies.

He is co-author of the industry publication, Guide to Physical Security Planning & Response for Hospitals, Medical, and Long-Term Care Facilities.
