Strategic Innovation – Prefabrication Redefined
Skilled labor shortages, supply chain issues, and inflated diesel fuel costs are amplifying market instability and increasing the risk of building projects for healthcare systems, architects, and their builders. Join us for a case study presentation on Mercy Health King Mills Hospital and how Onsite Prefabrication has helped Bon Secours Mercy Health, Danis Construction, and GBBN manage the risks, costs, and schedule of a large medical center project. This session will highlight a large effort to standardize quality across the client’s built environment through a system of architectural prototypes. Next, the OACM team will describe the physical constraints of deploying a 16,000 SF portable manufacturing facility onsite to industrialize construction of 25% of the building’s critical components. Learn how this innovation hedged market instability, increased labor utilization by 81% while also addressing the skilled labor shortage risk. Additionally, hear how the Owner established a project culture and team environment that encouraged innovation and resiliency.

Electrical Receptacles: Where Code-Minimum Meets Operationalizing Patient Care
Receptacle quantities are based upon the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) category of the space, type of room, and Facilities Guidelines Institute (FGI) Guidelines. As hospital patients become more ill and lifesaving equipment becomes more the norm, the complexity of building systems for hospitals grows. Telehealth and advances in technology add to the complication. Balancing the clinical needs with the expectation of personal technology provisions is the norm. Understanding how to navigate code and functional requirements of receptacle needs in inpatient spaces is the reason FGI created a Beyond Fundamentals white paper entitled “Electrical Receptacles in Patient Care Areas Where Code Minimum Meets Operationalizing Patient Care.” The goal of the document is to bring to light the decision-making process necessary for receptacles located in inpatient areas and to create a conversation regarding the basis of design to operationalize a healthcare facility.

I Love it, Now Change it – Avoiding Project Closeout Issues Through Proactive Planning
There is a growing phenomenon of projects putting together contingency or temporary work to achieve Certificates of Occupancy (CO) and then redesigning/rebuilding the completed work immediately after. Proactive planning for this scenario can help to avoid or address potential challenges after the CO has been issued.
Presenter: Doug King, AIA, NCARB, ACHA, Project Management Advisors, Inc. | Tory McNeil, PE, LEED AP, Guidon Design | Ethan Stefan, Project Management Advisors, Inc.
Bridging The Gap Between Effective Building Envelope Asset Assessment, Management & Capital Funding
This will be a joint case study presentation based on moving from a local campus driven building envelope assessment, management and funding program to a systemwide program which has resulted in reduced cost and improved performance. To date the primary focus has been on the roofing portion of the building envelope, but the program has revealed important understanding as to how other aspects of the exterior building envelope is/is not performing.

General Session: The Inflation Reduction Act and Its Impact on Healthcare (1 CEU)
The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) offers over $350 billion in federal incentives for clean and renewable energy investments, decarbonization, sustainability investments, energy efficiency, and infrastructure upgrades. As high-energy use facilities, healthcare owners have been slower to adopt green energy solutions due to cost and energy demand, but the IRA helps to break down these barriers to entry. In this session, we’ll break down the IRA so it’s easier to digest and show how it has been applied to real-life healthcare projects.

Growing Trust Capital, Facilities Stewardship Like a Boss
Developing trusting relationships with senior leadership is vital to securing support and funding for ongoing facilities stewardship needs. There’s just one big problem: Facilities leaders and the C-Suite speak different languages. What might seem like simple cause and effect communication to a facility professional might sound like a foreign language to business and medical professionals, as their communications often sound to the facilities team. Overcoming this language barrier is the first step to building trust capital and, in turn, creating better funding outcomes. Leveraging business acumen is an art and a science. Selecting the right data, using the right tools and telling a compelling story are learned skills, and the development of those skills often involves trial and error.
Presenter: Mark Kenneday, CHFM, CHC, FASHE, MBA, Gordian
What Happens the Day After the Open House?
This presentation will discuss the difference between “managing” clinical environments at the point of care as they relate to technology as opposed to just “dealing” with this space. We will discuss the importance of providing clinical teams the tools to manage their space in the post occupancy environment. Functional changes often take place faster than facilities can be built. During the lifecycle of a facility, or after the completion of construction or renovations, clinicians are often left to “deal with” a design intent which may no longer match their current needs. Especially in a Post COVID-19 world, Post Occupancy flexibility is more critical than ever. An Equipment Management Strategy gives owners, managers, and users the tools to “change and manage” their environments after they occupy the new space. Attendees will learn how managing a clinical environment will support re-building trust in healthcare delivery and allow for a “TRUE” terminal clean after discharging a patient.
