Electrical Receptacles: Where Code-Minimum Meets Operationalizing Patient Care
Receptacle quantities are based upon the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) category of the space, type of room, and Facilities Guidelines Institute (FGI) Guidelines. As hospital patients become more ill and lifesaving equipment becomes more the norm, the complexity of building systems for hospitals grows. Telehealth and advances in technology add to the complication. Balancing the clinical needs with the expectation of personal technology provisions is the norm. Understanding how to navigate code and functional requirements of receptacle needs in inpatient spaces is the reason FGI created a Beyond Fundamentals white paper entitled “Electrical Receptacles in Patient Care Areas Where Code Minimum Meets Operationalizing Patient Care.” The goal of the document is to bring to light the decision-making process necessary for receptacles located in inpatient areas and to create a conversation regarding the basis of design to operationalize a healthcare facility.

Growing Trust Capital, Facilities Stewardship Like a Boss
Developing trusting relationships with senior leadership is vital to securing support and funding for ongoing facilities stewardship needs. There’s just one big problem: Facilities leaders and the C-Suite speak different languages. What might seem like simple cause and effect communication to a facility professional might sound like a foreign language to business and medical professionals, as their communications often sound to the facilities team. What Happens the Day After the Open House?
This presentation will discuss the difference between “managing” clinical environments at the point of care as they relate to technology as opposed to just “dealing” with this space. We will discuss the importance of providing clinical teams the tools to manage their space in the post occupancy environment. Functional changes often take place faster than facilities can be built. During the lifecycle of a facility, or after the completion of construction or renovations, clinicians are often left to “deal with” a design intent which may no longer match their current needs. Especially in a Post COVID-19 world, Post Occupancy flexibility is more critical than ever. An Equipment Management Strategy gives owners, managers, and users the tools to “change and manage” their environments after they occupy the new space. Attendees will learn how managing a clinical environment will support re-building trust in healthcare delivery and allow for a “TRUE” terminal clean after discharging a patient.

Annual testing by a 3rd party, qualified testing company of specific areas within a healthcare facility is a requirement for accreditation, as well as to meet Infection Prevention protocol. Maintenance staff should also be trained to perform this testing. Instances when Maintenance Personnel should check the ventilation of specific rooms are aplenty in the healthcare setting. In this training, the ASHRAE 170 Standard will be reviewed and explained, with hand-on instruction on use of a standard Shortridge Flow Hood, including how to calculate the air exchanges.
